According to the Shastras (Epics), the practise of the Suryanamaskara is important for spiritual development. It helps keep the physical body fit and strong, maintain a good level of health, but the primary focus is to improve mind control and obtain greater devotion (Bhakti). The Suryanamaskara brings happiness, health and sunlight to the spirit. Therefore, its English name is the Sun Salutation.
